Do Botox Treatments for Black Skin Really Work?
Botox is praised for its versatility as a cosmetic injectable, maintaining its place as the top non-surgical treatment for 20 years now. Despite its popularity, there isnt a lot of information on Botox for Black patients.
So, do Botox treatments for Black skin in Washington, DC work? More importantly, are they safe? Heres what you need to know!
What Is Botox?
Botox is a neuromodulator that is formulated with the neurotoxin onabotulinumtoxinA. When injected into the skin, it targets the muscles and disrupts communication between them and their nerves so that they cannot contract, thus weakening and paralyzing this targeted group of muscles.
The point of this in cosmetic services is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, or it can be used to address a variety of other aesthetic concerns, such as a gummy smile or platysmal banding.
Is Botox Safe for Black Skin?
Although Botox is becoming increasingly popular in the POC community, Black patients should approach the injectable with some caution. Botox itself is perfectly safe for dark skin tones, the drug itself posing the same amount of risk and side effects as it would for anyone else – for the most part.
The safety of Botox for Black skin relies on who is administering the cosmetic injectable, as dark skin is at a higher risk for hyperpigmentation and scarring, which is why its incredibly important to find an aesthetic injector that knows how to work with dark skin in order to prevent this.
Ultimately, Botox as well as many other injectables are not only safe for darker skin tones but can be incredibly effective at addressing aesthetic concerns with the right injector.
How Does a Botox Treatment Differ for Patients of Color?
The Botox injection process shouldnt necessarily differ. Again, it relies on having a good injector who knows how to work with dark skin and has plenty of experience doing so. With the right injector, the Botox treatment process shouldnt look any different to anyone elses.
A Botox procedure is incredibly simple, not to mention surprisingly fast. The longest part is allowing your topical anesthetic to take full effect, which could take up to two weeks. From there, your provider begins the injection process, addressing the agreed upon treatment areas.
Your injector will more than likely ask that you stay for a short period to monitor that you dont have a reaction to Botox, and then youll be on your merry way!
How Do You Find a Reputable, Trustworthy Injector for Black Skin?
Despite living in the modern age, there are still aesthetic injectors who dont understand how to work with dark skin, and its crucial that you find the injectors who do. It doesnt look too different from finding a Botox injector in general, but there are some extra traits you should be on the lookout for to ensure that your experience with Botox is safe and satisfying.
- Ask them their experience with administering Botox to Black skin.
- Check that theyre board certified and have received the necessary training, licenses, and similar credentials.
- Learn about how this specific injector minimizes damage, risks, and side effects for dark skin.
- Look for an injector with a similar skin tone to you.
- Read their reviews to see if there are Black patients who have received successful Botox treatments from this injector.
- Take a look at their portfolio and note how many patients of color you see in their before / photos.
How Do You Prepare for a Botox Appointment?
If youve found an injector, its time for a consultation. During this consultation, youll have a discussion about why you want Botox, goals for your Botox treatment, medical history, current medications and / or supplements, and more. Then, your appointment for the actual injection is booked.
Thankfully, theres not a whole lot of prep work prior to a Botox appointment. Each injector has their own set of instructions, so make sure to follow them.
The universally agreed upon rules are:
- Avoid alcohol and nicotine use at least 48 hours prior to your treatment.
- Protect your skin from UV rays by staying out of the sun whenever possible and using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
- Quit taking certain medications (blood thinners, NSAIDs) and supplements (vitamin E, fish oil, St. Johns Wort) at least 48 hours in advance – but only after approval from your prescribing physician.
If you cannot stop taking your medications or supplements, dont worry! You wont be turned away based on that alone. The reason youre advised to avoid NSAIDs and other medications is to minimize your risk of bleeding or bruising.
What Does Botox Aftercare Look Like?
Caring for your skin after Botox is pretty easy as well. Aftercare looks different for everyone, but there are some tips and tricks that can take your results to the next level in the best way possible. Here are some ways to keep your skin safe and healthy, and reap the benefits of Botox:
- Avoid putting pressure or tugging / rubbing at the injection site, as this could disperse the Botox.
- Continue to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen.
- Gently exercise your facial muscles.
- Keep your head elevated for at least four hours after your treatment.
- Wait at least 24 hours before you exercise or drink alcohol.
