What Is Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery, also known as a nose job, is an outpatient surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance and function of the nose.

It’s often performed to enhance an individual’s features, improve facial harmony, repair damage from an accident or injury, or address breathing difficulties.

What Concerns Can a Nose Job Address?

Rhinoplasty is a complex and elegant procedure that requires expertise, precision, and an artistic eye.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kelly Bolden has extensive experience performing rhinoplasty to achieve natural-looking results, while maintaining unique ethnic characteristics.

Because each patient has individual needs and goals, Dr. Bolden will develop a customized treatment plan to successfully address your concerns.

With that being said, many patients seek a nose job to modify the size, shape, and projection of the nose; eliminate a dorsal hump; lift a droopy tip; straighten a crooked nose; reshape nostrils; correct functional issues such as a deviated septum; and improve quality of life.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Depending on case complexity, Dr. Bolden will recommend an open or closed technique. An open rhinoplasty involves incisions inside the nose as well as an external incision underneath the nose between the nostrils. On the other hand, a closed approach only requires internal incisions.

Once appropriate incisions have been made, cartilage, bone, and tissue are removed and reshaped to achieve desired effects.

A nose job can be completed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

What Can Patients Expect from Rhinoplasty Recovery?

Following rhinoplasty surgery with Dr. Bolden, patients will experience bruising and swelling around the nose as well as occasionally around the eyes. Accordingly, they should keep their head elevated for at least 24-48 hours after surgery.

Depending on the extent of structural work on the nose, the patient may have internal and/or external nasal splints for support and protection.  The patient will need to keep the nasal airway hydrated and clean with saline mists as nose blowing is not allowed within the first few days after surgery.

Within a week, individuals can return to work, but should avoid strenuous activity for at least three weeks.

In the coming weeks and months, swelling gradually subsides and improved nasal shape and contours are revealed. However, it can take up to a year to appreciate final rhinoplasty results.
