What Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Male breast reduction surgery is a surgical procedure designed to eliminate unwanted fat and glandular tissue and reshape a man’s chest.

It is the most effective treatment for gynecomastia, in which hormones, street drugs, cigarette smoking, genetics, some medications (i.e. steroids), and certain medical conditions lead to male breast enlargement.

While fat can significantly contribute to enlargement of male breasts, it’s important to note that gynecomastia is characterized by the development of firm glandular tissue, which cannot be reduced through diet and exercise.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Healthy men who are bothered by enlarged breasts and would like to achieve a flatter and more masculine chest appearance, with improved contours, are often excellent candidates for male breast reduction surgery.

Patients that have sustained major weight loss via diet and exercise or bariatric surgery may also benefit from male breast reduction surgery.  Patients should not smoke or abstain from smoking for at least four weeks before and after surgery.

How Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Male breast reduction surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under either IV sedation or general anesthesia. The surgical treatment plan often depends on the extent of enlargement, skin quality, amount of fat, and amount of glandular tissue.

Depending on the amount of fatty and glandular tissue, the excess tissue can be removed using liposuction, direct excision, or a combination of both.  In patients where the primary excess tissue is fatty and little to no skin excess, liposuction can be used to extract the excess fat via a small incision around the areola.

If more glandular tissue is present, a combination of liposuction and excision can be performed via a small incision around the areola.  If there is a moderate to severe amount of excess fatty and/or glandular tissue, as well as excess skin, more extensive excision may be required using either a double incision or anchor incision.

No matter what procedure is performed, Dr. Bolden makes every effort to conceal any scars as much as possible.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery Results

Male breast reduction surgery has an extremely high rate of patient satisfaction. Following surgery, men are pleased to note visible improvement in chest shape and contours.

Results become more noticeable as swelling subsides, and patients will become more comfortable baring their chests or wearing slim-cut t-shirts.

These results are best-maintained through a healthy lifestyle, including a clean diet and regular exercise.
