Yes, Women of Color Can Get Laser Hair Removal

If you’re a woman of color, you might have heard the conventional wisdom that laser hair removal doesn’t work except for women with dark hair and light skin.

Unfortunately, there was a point in time where this was true–much to the chagrin of any women of color interested in the treatment.

Especially when the individual in question has hair and skin of similar colors, making it especially difficult for lasers.

But it’s not actually the case anymore, and while you may have to do your research, laser hair removal is available to anyone nowadays.

Newly Pervasive Lasers

The reason why laser hair removal only worked for women with light skin and dark hair was because most practices only had Alexandrite lasers.

Nowadays, Nd:YAG wavelength lasers are available, and these tend to work a lot better for women of color. Possibly because cosmetic treatment is still growing more popular and expanding to more demographics.

Which is great, because lasers can do quite a lot to help anyone with their look. Women, and women of color especially, can have issues with ingrown hairs.

And lasers do a good job of removing these ingrown hairs, allowing the skin to heal and eventually lose the scarring.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Thankfully, now that more lasers are pervasively accessible, there’s a good chance that you’re a candidate for laser hair removal.

For individuals wanting the treatment, it’s a matter of making sure that the clinic they go to for treatment has the appropriate laser.

So if you’re a woman of color, this may mean doing a little bit more research–but in the end, it’s worth it to make sure that the treatment is matched to your needs.
