Although breast augmentation is currently the most popular cosmetic procedure among Americans, not all women that seek breast surgery want to increase their busts.

In fact, many patients hope to decrease the size of their breasts, improve their shape, or get a more lifted and youthful appearance. To achieve these goals, women often undergo a breast reduction or a breast lift.

So, what’s the difference between a breast lift and a breast reduction?

Here’s what you need to know about these two procedures to determine which may be right for you.

What Is a Breast Lift?

breast lift is a surgical procedure that addresses skin laxity to reshape and reposition breasts.

Many women seek a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, to lift breasts that have become saggy and deflated due to weight loss, pregnancy, breast feeding, or the natural aging process.

Not only can the treatment help breasts look perkier and more youthful, but it can also adjust the size, shape, and position of the areola and nipple so that they are in proper proportion to the lifted breasts.

What Is a Breast Reduction?

Women that struggle with breasts that are too heavy or large for their frame may wish to undergo a breast reduction.

By removing excess fat, skin, and breast tissue, a breast reduction can decrease the size and volume of breasts, correct asymmetry (if one breast is larger than the other), and reshape and reposition the breasts.

What’s the Difference Between a Breast Lift and a Breast Reduction?

While a breast reduction targets fat, skin, and breast tissue, a breast lift only affects loose skin.

Additionally, a breast reduction is best suited for women that are uncomfortable with the size, shape, and position of their breasts, whereas a breast lift is more appropriate in cases where shape and position are the main concerns.

How to Decide Which Type of Breast Surgery Is Right for You?

Women considering a breast reduction or a breast lift should take into account their goals and day-to-day lives to determine which option may be right for them.

Patients typically elect a breast reduction for aesthetic and functional reasons, as their heavy breasts cause discomfort and interfere in their daily activities.

In fact, you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction if you experience back, neck, shoulder pain, skin rashes and irritation, indentations in skin from bra straps, and difficulty finding clothing and bras that fit well and offer adequate support

However, if you are pleased with the size of your breasts, but find that they appear flat, droopy or your nipples point down and fall below the breast crease, then a breast lift may be your best option.
