Why Am I Getting These Tiny Black Moles on My Face?
Patients may present to their dermatologist with tiny black spots on their cheeks and around the eyes and believe that they have moles.
Despite their similar appearance, these dots are not moles, freckles, or signs of melanoma.
They are actually dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN), which is a purely cosmetic concern.
What Is Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN)?
Dermatosis papulosa nigra may sound complicated, but it is simply a build-up of epidermal skin cells. They are completely benign, and are never cancerous or viral.
A patient may have a few spots or hundreds, and they are usually the size of a pinpoint.
However, several spots can cluster together to form one very large spot.
Why Do Patients Get DPN?
DPN is hereditary and thats why these spots may also be called family moles.
Chances are if your mother or grandmother has DPN, its likely you may experience it as well.
In addition, DPN is more common in African American patients and those with darker skin tones.
At Home-Treatments for DPN
Due to its genetic cause, DPN cannot be completely prevented. However, patients can take steps in their skincare regimen to improve the appearance of these dark spots.
A daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least a 30 SPF can slow the growth and shield spots from getting darker.
Glycolic cleansers, salicylic washes, and retinols promote skin-cell turnover and can help prevent existing spots from getting larger.
