Things I Wish I Knew Before I Got Breast Reduction Surgery
For many women, breast reduction surgery is an extremely positive experience.
It alleviates discomfort, boosts confidence, streamlines the silhouette, increases clothing options, and improves quality of life.
In addition to these benefits, there are some other important factors to consider before undergoing surgery. Here are 5 things I wish I knew before I got breast reduction surgery.
Things I Wish I Knew Before I Got Breast Reduction Surgery
1. Clothes Will Fit Better
Prior to undergoing breast reduction surgery, most women are prepared to go down one or more cup sizes and are looking forward to purchasing new, better-fitting bras.
However, you may be surprised to find that you’ll also be able to wear a smaller size in shirts and tops. This is especially true for women who have gone through life buying a larger size top, to accommodate their breasts, even though it was baggy everywhere else.
2. Revision is a Possibility
In the hands of a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon, breast reduction surgery has an extremely high rate of patient satisfaction. In fact, most women’s only complaint is that they didn’t do it sooner.
With that being said, patients should be prepared for the possibility of a revision. According to recent data, revision is necessary in 3-7% of plastic surgery cases.
The good news is that, these small tweaks can often be performed in-office, under local anesthesia, and with minimal downtime.
3. Insurance Coverage Could be Challenging
When excess breast tissue and breast weight limit daily activities and cause back and shoulder pain, most insurance companies will provide coverage for breast reduction surgery.
But in order to determine your actual benefits, be sure to contact your carrier directly and find out what steps you need to take to receive coverage.
4. Scars May be More Noticeable than Expected
While every effort is made to conceal incisions and produce barely noticeable scars, everyone heals differently. As a result, it’s possible that scarring may be more prominent than expected.
Accordingly, it’s a good idea to discuss possible options for scar revision before breast reduction surgery.
5. Numbness Can be Temporary or Permanent
Post-procedure, swelling typically causes numbness in the nipple-areolar complex. This side effect is usually temporary, and sensitivity gradually returns.
Just keep in mind that numbness can be permanent, with full or partial loss of nipple sensitivity.
