This Problem Had Jada Pinkett Smith ‘Shaking With Fear,’ and Shes Not Alone
Actress Jada Pinkett Smith recently revealed on her talk show that she was showering one morning and looked down to find a clump of hair in her hand.
She was shocked and frightened by this sight and later made the decision to try a new super-short hairstyle.
Like many men and women, Jada suffers from alopecia, which is the medical term for hair loss. This condition can cause embarrassment, affect self-esteem, and create frustration.
Fortunately, your dermatologist can help you determine the cause of your loss of hair and the subsequent hair loss treatment alternatives. Heres how.
What causes hair loss in women?
The first step in dealing with hair loss is identifying the underlying cause. This knowledge will allow your dermatologist to recommend ways to reduce the loss and/or restore hair growth.
Possible causes of hair loss include: Hereditary, anemia, a thyroid condition, lupus, decreased protein, vitamin D deficiency, hormonal imbalance, pregnancy, and emotional stress.
Medications can also contribute to hair loss. Let your provider know if you are taking blood pressure medication, cholesterol lowering medication, oral contraceptives, or diet pills.
How Can Your Dermatologist Diagnose Hair Loss?
Your dermatologist will begin evaluating your hair loss with a thorough patient history. You may be asked to provide information about any recent illness, surgeries, family history, medications, dietary modifications, and hormonal changes.
A hair densitometer may be used to assess the density and miniaturization of your hair, and a hair pull test can provide information about the severity of loss. Your dermatologist may also examine your scalp with a dermatome.
Are There Any Tests to Determine the Cause of Hair Loss?
During your consultation, blood samples will be taken to be tested by the lab.
More specifically, a complete blood count (CBC) provides data about any blood loss, anemia or vitamin deficiencies; ANA tests for lupus; serum iron and iron binders are evaluated for anemia; and T3, T4, and TSH hormones are assessed for any thyroid conditions.
A scalp biopsy may also be conducted.
How Can Hair Loss Be Treated?
Often correcting the underlying cause of hair loss resolves the issue. In cases of alopecia areata, the hair follicles remain alive and can regrow, so time and patience may also be advised.
Additionally, localized hair loss that is the result of hereditary may be treated with medication, hair transplant surgery, or hair restoration with platelet-rich plasma.
