Is Your Cell Phone Causing Your Breakouts?
Many individuals are so attached to their mobile devices that they don’t think twice before bringing them everywhere they go, even germ-filled places like the bathroom.
However, this seemingly harmless behavior can increase a patient’s risk for colds and viruses, and may even be responsible for recent skin issues.
So, is your cell phone causing your breakouts? Here are some of the ways that your phone is affecting your skin, and how you can avoid these problems in the future.
You Could Be Allergic to Your Phone
Whether or not patients realize it, they often press their phones directly against their faces when they are on a call.
This can be cause for concern, especially for men and women that spend a considerable amount of time on their devices.
According to Dr. Lian Mack, also known as GlamDerm, phones can be made of metals such as nickel and chromium that often irritate the skin.
Dr. Mack also explains that, “These materials may cause an allergic reaction once they contact the dermis which usually manifests itself as an itchy, red rash.”
You’re Exposing Your Face to Bacteria That’s Living on Your Phone
When we place our phones down on various surfaces, we are exposing them to all sorts of germs.
In turn, these bugs can spread and join the bacteria that’s already present on our face.
Dr. Mack says that there are four common types of bacteria that live on the skin: Propionibacterium acnes, Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus.
These bacteria only become an issue when they overgrow and cause inflammation and acne breakouts.
How to Eliminate Offending Bacteria and Combat Breakouts
Patients can still enjoy their phones and maintain the health and appearance of their skin by taking certain precautions.
To Start, They Should Get Extractions
Dr. Mack says, “I recommend extractions routinely. In my office, we perform medical facials. We apply a detox gel, steam and then gently extract all of the oil from the pores.”
Another Smart Move Is to Consistently Follow a Daily Skincare Regimen
Ensuring that you exfoliate, cleanse, and nourish your skin will prevent bacteria build-up and acne.
The use of certain products, like vitamin c, glycolic acid, and retinols, will also promote cell turnover and help your skin look more even, radiant, and smooth.
