IPL to Get Rid of Sun Spots
Intense Pulsed Light isn’t actually a laser treatment — though it’s easy to make that mistake.
And yet, like many of the laser treatments for skin rejuvenation, it can do a wonderful job of boosting collagen production to revitalize your skin.
But what you might not know is that IPL is also great for getting rid of sunspots.
IPL differs from lasers in that it’s broad spectrum instead of single wavelength.
It’s not quite as targeted of a treatment as lasers, but it’s perfect for fixing pigmentation issues, such as with skin tone.
Who Benefits the Most from IPL?
Intense Pulse Light tends to work best for those who have a fairer skin tone.
In general, these are the demographic of people who would be getting sun spots anyway–but, more to the point, IPL can needs to be done more gently with individuals with darker skin tone, leading to more modest results.
So, if you’re the type that sun burns easily, and sun spots and freckles develop on your chest more than you like, then you might just be the perfect candidate for IPL.
What’s Treatment Actually Like?
The feeling of IPL can be compared to rubber bands snapping against your skin. Many find this to be an eminently tolerable level of discomfort.
Downtime for IPL is modest: it should take about a week for post-treatment skin issues to clear up, though they can also be covered up pretty easily with makeup.
After IPL, it’s best to make sure to put on sunscreen to maintain results for the long haul. IPL can treat sunspots, but overall prevention and maintenance goes a longer way.
Remember: preventative medicine is the best kind of medicine, even for cosmetic issues.
