Answers to Common Dermal Filler Questions

Dermal fillers are big. And they’re more popular than ever–having definitely made the rounds on social media.

So it’s possible that, having noticed a celebrity whose lips suddenly went “va-voom!” you might be curious about the product yourself.

Here are answers to some of the most common dermal filler questions.

1. Are There Different Types of Fillers?

Yes, actually. The most popular fillers are typically made from hyaluronic acid–including Restylane and Juvederm.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the body. It helps deliver both nutrients and hydration to the skin.

Other filler types include purified forms of collagen, or synthetic substances meant to imitate these fillers.

Synthetics potentially last longer than other types of fillers, but may make the patient more susceptible to side effects such as bruising.

2. Is There a Difference Between Filler and Botox?

Absolutely. Both are used to treat wrinkles, but they go about it in different ways.

Dermal fillers do just what the name insinuates–they “fill” in volume, and allow the clinician to contour your face.

Botox, meanwhile, is best seen as a muscle relaxant that stops the contractions that cause the wrinkles.

3. Will Filler Stick Around Forever?

No–which is both a good thing and a bad thing, but mostly a good thing.

The bad news is that if you get filler and love it, you’ll need to touch it up every so often.

The good news is if you get filler and don’t love it, then you can either use hyaluronidase (in the case of hyaluronic acid fillers) and get rid of it, or simply wait for it to wear off. This makes fillers the safest cosmetic treatment around.

4. Is There Anything I Should Worry About With Fillers?

Yes, just like anything else. Fillers can cause bruising or bleeding under the skin–and some individuals may be allergic.

However, if you listen to your doctor and take precautions such as taking Vitamin E prior to the treatment, you can minimize these risks.
