Winter is upon us. For many of us that means cracked, dry and downright painful skin.

We know that as the air becomes drier, and more harsh, our skin can be at its most vulnerable state.

But does winter have to strike so much fear in us that we don’t go outside?

No! Here are some important facts to know about darker skin tones to help survive and thrive during the cold months.

Moisturizing

With cold winter weather negatively affecting the way we retain moisture, many people are looking for ways to protect our gorgeous locks, but why is it that many of us neglect to put the same dedication toward protecting our skin?

Because the harsh effects of winter weather are usually more visibly pronounced on darker skin tones, it’s important for us to take extra precaution with protection in the cold.

Retaining the moisture we need throughout the day can be a challenge during the winter months. But, it’s important to remember that by moisturizing, you give your skin the best chance at surviving the dry climate.

And although we all love a nice, long and hot shower–it’s a really a no no during the winter.

“Limit your showers to five minutes using lukewarm water vs. hot water,” said Philadelphia based, board certified dermatologist, Dr. Nazanin Saedi. “As comforting as those long, hot showers in the winter seem, they tend to dry out the skin.”

Exfoliation

There is a myth that excessively exfoliating will take away the flakes and dry skin.

But, medical professionals suggest that we resist the temptation of exfoliating during the cold months.

“One of the biggest skincare mistakes I see is over-exfoliating during the winter months because the skin tends to be drier,” said licensed Aesthetician, Niecey Duncan. “There’s a belief that [exfoliating] will take away the dryness and any flakiness. Over-exfoliating actually causes the skin to appear and feel even drier which can lead to inflammation and in darker skin types. This can cause skin tones to become uneven with areas of hyperpigmentation.”

So, now that you’re armed with useful information, go out and enjoy the winter!
