Breast Augmentation in DMV Area
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures and has the ability to improve breast size, shape, and projection and boost a woman’s confidence.
In fact, breast implant surgery has one of the highest rates of patient satisfaction and is a safe and effective procedure in the hands of a skilled and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon.
However, breast augmentation does require anesthesia, incisions, and a period of recovery, so patients should consider these factors when deciding if this treatment is right for them.
Keep reading to learn more about breast augmentation candidates, implant options, risks, and recovery.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Healthy adults that want to improve the appearance and feel of their breasts in and out of clothes may be good candidates for breast augmentation.
It’s recommended that patients wait until breast tissue has fully matured before undergoing implant surgery, and silicone implants are not indicated for women younger than 22 years old.
Additionally, individuals should be seeking augmentation as a personal choice and not because they are being pressured by outside influence.
It’s important that patients have realistic expectations of surgery and reveal any body-image issues to their surgeon.
How to Select Implant Size, Style, Shape, and Placement?
A qualified plastic surgeon can expertly guide the selection of implant size, style, shape, and placement. Nevertheless, patients should be aware of how these factors may affect their final results.
When it comes to implant size, aesthetic experts recommend choosing a volume that is proportionate with the patient’s body shape and anatomy.
Next, women must select either a silicone filled implant, which is softer and more natural, or a saline filled implant, that offers an easily adjustable volume during surgery and allows for quicker detection of ruptures and leaks.
Additionally, implant shape must be considered, with a choice of round for more cleavage and upper pole fullness or teardrop for a more realistic appearance and lower pole fullness.
Finally, patients will be asked if they prefer their implants to be submuscular, under the chest muscles, or subglandular, above chest muscles.
Submuscular tends to produce more natural results, but subglandular has a shorter recovery and smaller incision.
Risks of Breast Augmentation
While all surgery carries some risk, breast augmentation is a very safe procedure when performed by a qualified and board-certified plastic surgeon.
Some risks to consider include: Anesthesia complications, bleeding/hematoma, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, poor healing of incisions, malposition of the implants, implant leakage or rupture, capsular contracture (scar tissue around the implant), fluid accumulation, skin rippling, chronic pain, and need for a revision surgery.
What’s It Like to Recover From Breast Implant Surgery?
Once the surgery is complete, patients will recover within the surgical center or hospital for approximately an hour before going home. Downtime is typically three-to-five days.
Women often experience tightness, soreness, and itching after surgery, though most do not feel significant pain. Discomfort can be managed with prescription pain medication or Tylenol.
Additionally, plastic surgeons recommend wearing a surgical bra for two weeks post-procedure, sleeping in an upright position, and avoiding heavy lifting and upper body exercise for at least two weeks.
