Botox Maker Invests In Cream That Could Eliminate Eye Surgery
XAF5 is a revolutionary cream that was developed by Topokine Therapeutics.
Earlier this year, Allergan, the company that manufactures Botox, Latisse and Juvederm, bought the company for a reported $85 million.
According to New Beauty, XAF5 Ointment is a topical cream that’s used under the eyes and is expected to become available some time in 2018.
The thing that has many people interested is that the cream works to fight fat pockets under the eyes, which leads to bags and bulging.
“XAF5 has the potential to be the first topical fat reduction product for the treatment of steatoblepharon, a condition with no current therapeutic options available for patients. We look forward to continuing the outstanding development work conducted by the Topokine team to bring this innovative medical aesthetic treatment to market,” said David Nicholson, Executive Vice President and President, Global Brands Research & Development at Allergan.
Could this groundbreaking cream make blepharoplasty a thing of the past?
“Topical creams may provide temporary improvement of under-eye bags, but will never replace lower Blepharoplasty (eye surgery),” said renowned and double board-certified oculo-facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Soheila Rostami.
“Eye bags are a result of fat and bone loss in the mid-face. Patients looking for a permanent change will need to consider eyelid surgery,” said Dr. Rostami.
Only time will tell how effective XAF5 will be, but the possibility of a cream making a visible difference in as little as five weeks certainly is fascinating.
The proprietary active ingredient penetrates the skin and acts on the fat cells to shrink under-eye bags and according to New Beauty, results can be seen in about five weeks.
According to Allergan’s press release, an estimated 40 million Americans have steatoblepharon, which can make the face look older, tired, stressed or sad.
