Botox Approved by the FDA to Treat Forehead Lines

Seven million Americans a year receive Botox injections. That number is sure to go up now that the FDA has approved Botox (botulinum toxin) fore forehead wrinkles.

For nearly two decades, only frown lines and crow’s feet—laugh lines—were approved by the federal agency. Botox is the No.1 anti-aging method. The FDA approved it back in 2002. And people love it.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported nearly $3 billion of Botox sales. The drug is also administered in the armpits, stomach, scalp and neck. But for now, the FDA has only approved injections in three areas.

The toxin blocks the signals that cause the muscles to contract.

Anyone interested in the treatment should know a few things.

First, Botox injections, on average (nationwide) are about $385 per area. The procedure, in the hands of a trained professional, is relatively simple.

A medical professional will insert a bit of Botox into your muscles by way of a very fine needle. No anesthesia is required.

It is important to skip the bar for a few days prior as alcohol should to be avoided before going in (thin blood can lead to more bruising and swelling). Stay away from anti-inflammatory medication and aspirin for a few days prior as well for the same reasons.

Roughly seven to 14 days after the procedure, though, will reveal the effects of your Botox. Not only does it significantly reduce wrinkles, the injection even prevents migraines, neck spasms, excessive sweating, and lazy eyes.

Botox is good for about four months before a patient will need to make another visit.

There can be side effects, but bruising, swelling and slight pain around the injection site are nothing to worry about. This is normal. More serious concerns can be trouble swallowing or breathing and an uncontrollable bladder.

Still, the FDA approved it all for a reason. It is safe when issued by a licensed medical professional.

Of course, you should always let your injector know if you’re pregnant or taking any allergy medication, muscle relaxers or sleeping aids.
