Black Girl Skincare Tips: Transitioning from Winter to Spring

  • Replace your makeup brushes. As a general rule of thumb, change your brushes with every season if they are shedding, start to smell, or become discolored.
  • While you’re at it, toss out old makeup. You might not know that many makeup products like blush, eyeshadow, and foundation only last about two years. Some even less. So, if you’ve had your makeup for awhile, it’s out with the old and in with the new, especially if it’s past the expiration date! Old mascara and other items can cause infection from bacteria, posing health risks.
  • Exfoliate. It’s time to renew your skin, and you can accelerate that process by getting rid of dead skin cells dulling your shine.
  • Slather on the sunscreen. To help avoid hyperpigmentation and maintain an even skin tone, use protection against the sun. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Switch to water-based skin serums, and use lighter cleansers. Heavier skincare products can irritate your skin, causing inflammation. Use hydrating products that moisturize in the springtime to help keep skin healthy.
