Bet You Didn’t Know Botox Helps With This
Botox is a miracle drug, it seems. Not only have doctors used it to tighten up fine lines and wrinkles, it also stops excessive sweating, and can apparently even help with depression.
Now, a recent study has shown the effectiveness of using Botox to treat burning mouth syndrome.
What Is Botox?
Botox Cosmetic is the most popular cosmetic treatment on the market and it is impressive just how many uses there are for this wonder drug.
In most cases, patients seek Botox to help get a refreshed look. Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet lines and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.
Burning Mouth Syndrome?
Patients describe burning mouth syndrome as a burning, scalding, or tingling feeling in the mouth. Some patients even describe a feeling of numbness.
Besides that, patients also report altered tastes in the mouth or dry mouth.
Doctors need to run many tests to determine if you have burning mouth syndrome.
They also may need to run blood tests, oral swab tests, allergy tests, salivary flow tests, and even tissue biopsies to diagnose burning mouth syndrome.
The actual underlying cause of burning mouth syndrome is damage caused to the nerves that control pain and taste.
Why Does Botox Work?
At this point, it’s hard to say anything definitive.
But, based on another popular use of Botox, reducing the pain of migraines, it’s possible that Botox reduces pain signals from the nerves to the brain.
Essentially, because Botox is actually a neurotoxin that paralyzes certain nerves, the brain is unable to recognize the signals from the damaged nerves.
