Breast revision surgery can be done for many reasons, and those circumstances can be cosmetic or medical.

Not sure if you qualify? Let’s take a look at who is and is not a good candidate for breast revision surgery  in DC.

Why Would I Not Qualify for Breast Revision Surgery?

There are several reasons why your plastic surgeon might feel you’re not an ideal candidate for breast revision surgery.

  • Let’s start with age.
    • This type of surgery is typically not recommended for females under the age of 18. Most females continue development until they are in their 20s. Breast revision surgery before you are through adolescence can lead to deformed breasts.
  • Are you pregnant or nursing?
    • If so, it’s a good idea to postpone surgery. Breast revision surgery changes the tissue and can interfere with the production of breast milk.
  • Medication conflicts.
    • Certain medical conditions might make it impossible for you to have breast revision surgery. Breast cancer, an abnormal mammogram, any type of infection, or certain illnesses can preclude you from having surgery.
  • Good Mental Health is Crucial.
    • It’s important you have realistic expectations and are in a good mental state before having breast revision surgery. You shouldn’t have this surgery if you are hoping it will change all aspects of your life. Cosmetic surgery is not a replacement for therapy when dealing with depression and / or anxiety over body image concerns.

A lack of education about breast revision surgery is a concern for many plastic surgeons. Of course, you will be well-informed before you have surgery, but you should also take time to do some research on your own. Have a very clear understanding of how breast revision surgery works, the risks, and recovery.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Revision Surgery?

Breast revision surgery is performed for many reasons, and you may be eligible if:

  • You are unhappy with the shape and / or size of your breasts after an injury, previous surgery, or other event.
  • You are experiencing complications such as scar tissue from a previous breast revision surgery.
  • Your implants are causing you discomfort.
  • Your implants are leaking or have ruptured.
  • You want to change the type of implant; for example – silicone to saline or vice-versa.

Talk with a Professional

The best and only real way to find out if you are a good candidate for breast revision surgery is by meeting with your plastic surgeon. To start, you’ll have a medical evaluation to make sure you are healthy enough to proceed.

Ideally, you are a non-smoker and can commit to avoiding alcohol for a period of time before breast revision surgery. You should also be prepared to rest during your recovery.

If you are getting saline implants, you must be at least 18 years old. If you are getting silicone, the FDA requires a patient to be at least 22 years old.

If your breasts are sagging, elongated, asymmetrical, and / or lacking volume and you meet the criteria listed above, you’re likely a great candidate for breast revision surgery.
