With dropping temperatures and wind, the winter months can wreak havoc on the skin.

To protect against dryness, flaking, and cracks, patients must take necessary precautions on a daily basis.

This advice is especially true for women of color, who are more prone to hyperpigmentation during this time of year.

Skin experts recommend eight tips for women of color during the wintertime:

To avoid drying out skin with hot water, women of color should opt for colder, shorter showers. Taking a 5-10-minute shower daily is recommended.

2. Do Not Delay Moisturizing

Physicians advise that women of color should moisturize immediately after a shower.

Using a cream with ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid acts as a barrier to seal in all of the moisture.

Additionally, thicker moisturizing products like vaseline and petroleum jelly should be applied to the driest parts of the body like elbows and knees.

3. Limit Time Spent Outside

Avoid prolonged exposure to the winter elements including walking or outdoor sports and activities.

It is not uncommon for women of color to experience freezer burn from wind and very cold weather.

Freezer burns are similar to sunburns, and patients are at risk for developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation as a result.

4. Use Mild, Unscented Skin Soap and Skincare Products

Physicians recommend that women of color avoid heavily scented and anti-bacterial soaps which can be very drying.

Gentle, fragrance-free products are preferred as they will not strip the skin of its natural oils.

5. Wear Sunscreen EVERYDAY!

The use of sunscreen on a daily basis is one of the most important tips for winter skincare, but is often overlooked.

Damaging UV rays are present even on the cloudiest day, so sunscreen must consistently be applied before going outdoors.

6. Avoid Irritating Clothing Materials

While wool may provide warmth in cold weather, it can cause itching and inflammation to the skin. The cycle of irritation and scratching is often difficult to break once it begins.

Therefore, it is best to stick with 100 percent cotton in your winter weather clothing and accessories.

7. Use a Humidifier

The dry air from central heat in the winter months can be very damaging to skin.

A humidifier will help distribute moisture in your bedroom as you sleep and counteract the dry air from the heat.

8. Use Moisturizer Daily, Regardless of Skin Type

Often patients with oily skin are less likely to use moisturizer for fear that their skin will become oilier. However, experts note that oil is not the same as moisture.

Individuals with oily skin may wish to cleanse with an oil-reducing product and then apply a moisturizer that is labeled oil-free.

This strategy will allow patients to maintain hydration of the skin and reduce likelihood of excessive oiliness.
