8 Myths About Retinol Debunked
Retinoids (a term that encompasses all retinol products) are one of the most effective and economical ways to improve skin quality and combat signs of aging.
However, there are a number of misconceptions about these skincare products that can interfere with their use and benefits.
Here are eight retinol myths debunked.
1. Retinol Works by Exfoliating the Skin
One of the biggest misconceptions about retinoids is that they simply remove dead skin cells.
When in actuality, they are much more complex and remodel skin through cellular renewal and collagen production.
2. Sun and Retinol Don’t Mix
Another myth that many patients have heard about retinoids is that they make skin more prone to a sunburn.
While retinoids do breakdown in sunlight and are best applied in the evening, clinical studies show that they do not increase an individual’s risk of sunburn.
3. Retinol Takes 4-6 Weeks to Work
This statement isn’t correct, and it actually takes longer to see retinoid effects.
According to aesthetic experts, within 12 weeks patients will notice skin smoothing and rejuvenation from retinol use.
4. Lower Percentage Retinol Offer the Same Efficacy as a Stronger Percentage
For individuals with sensitive skin, a gentle retinoid with a lower concentration won’t be as effective as a stronger product–at least not right away.
However, it will help increase the skin’s tolerance to retinoids, so that patients can eventually begin using a higher percentage with greater benefits.
5. Irritation Is a Sign That You Should Stop Using Retinoids
A certain degree of flushing, dryness, and light peeling is to be expected with retinoids.
Within two-to-three weeks, skin will begin to adjust, and the irritation should subside.
Nevertheless, if the irritation is prolonged or severe, patients should consider reducing the strength and frequency.
6. Retinoids Shouldn’t Be Used While on a Tropical Vacation
This myth is likely linked to the false belief that retinoid use can increase your chances of a sunburn.
That being said, it’s actually a good idea to apply retinoids while on a tropical vacation because they have been shown to prevent collagen breakdown after UV exposure.
7. Eyes Are Too Delicate for Retinoid Application
Retinoids can and should be used around the eyes, as this area is often in need of considerable repair.
Additionally, aesthetic experts assure patients that the skin around the eyes is no more likely that other areas of the face to encounter mild irritation.
8. Benefits Plateau After Six Months
According to researchers, retinoid benefits are progressive for over a year.
If, at that time, patients see reduced efficacy, they could start using a stronger prescription retinoid to improve results.
