5 Things to Know Before Getting Breast Implants
It’s normal for women to feel both excited and nervous before getting breast implants.
Many patients look forward to improving the size and shape of their breasts, but it’s also important to understand that it can take several months to see final results.
To better prepare for the recovery process and manage expectations, here are five things to know before getting breast implants.
1. Implants May Be Positioned Unusually High After Surgery
It’s not uncommon for women to be surprised by the appearance of their new breasts immediately after surgery.
In fact, plastic surgeons warn that the implants will sit high on the chest until swelling starts to decrease.
Within three-to-six weeks, breast implants will fall into their proper position and look and feel softer.
2. They Can Temporarily Look Square or Extremely Round
In addition to sitting high, breast implants can initially look square or elongated.
However, this shape is temporary and, as the muscle and tissue begin to accommodate the implant, they will look more natural and attractive.
3. Skin on the Breasts May Feel Itchy
Implants are often used to augment the breasts one or more cup sizes. As a result, the skin must expand, and patients may feel itchy because of this stretching.
Additionally, healing incisions, creams, dressings, surgical garments, and bras can also irritate the breasts and cause itchiness.
4. Nipples May Look Disproportionate
Once again, stretching of the skin from breast implants can cause the areola and nipples to look larger than before.
However, they will adjust to match the size of the breasts once implants take their final shape.
5. They May Feel Foreign at First
While some women embrace their implants as part of their body immediately, many find that they feel foreign at first.
Fortunately, as the implants descend to the pocket and settle, they begin to feel and move more naturally.
Within a couple of months, most patients love the look of their new breasts and cannot sense that the implants are even there.
