Botox for Men: What to Expect
Let’s say you’re a dude. Let’s say you wanna try Botox, cultural stigma be damned (although that’s definitely going away) and you think it might just be the treatment for you.
What’s stopping you?
For many, a lack of knowledge. For one, not knowing if Botox can actually resolve their aesthetic concerns, not knowing if it’s the best treatment for them, and just a lack of knowledge in general.
If you’re one of these men, then here are some basic things to expect.
1. Botox Is a Neuromodulator
First, it’s helpful to know how Botox works. The long and short of it is that Botox is a neuromodulator–it stops acetylcholine from being released and causing muscular contraction.
This muscular contraction allows your facial muscles to relax, thereby diminishing the appearance and formation of wrinkles.
2. Botox Should Only Be Given by an Experienced Provider
Certification matters. While Botox is an eminently safe injectable, it’s safe because it’s in the hands of an experienced provider.
Look out for certification from organizations like the American Board of Cosmetic Surgeons or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
3. What’s the Actual Procedure Like?
What you’ve heard about Botox is that it’s safe, quick, and easy.
All of this is true. But that doesn’t translate into our brains without concrete details.
When you are setting up the procedure, it’s much like any other procedure. You’ll be filling out forms, the doctor will ask you basic questions.
During the actual procedure, you’ll lie down on a slightly inclined table and you’ll be injected.
Does it hurt? Many say no, though mileage may vary, and, at any rate, the doctors give you a ball to squeeze throughout the procedure.
Barring a fear of needles, it’s all very easy to handle.
4. Results Need to Be Maintained
And what can you expect after the procedure? One of the safety features of Botox is its impermanency–but in practicality, it just means that those who use Botox need to maintain it every six months or so.
For those who aren’t sure if it’s right for them, this means they essentially have a trial run–and if at the end of six months they feel it’s not worth it, they can simply drop it, or they can decide to maintain it.
