What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty or eyelid lift, is an outpatient plastic surgery procedure designed to rejuvenate the eyes and achieve a more youthful and vibrant appearance.

It can also alleviate upper eyelid ptosis, or drooping, that interferes with peripheral vision and daily functioning.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Women and men who are in good health and wish to improve the appearance and, in some cases, function of their eyes are often good candidates for blepharoplasty.

It’s important that patients considering this procedure are non-smokers and have realistic expectations about eyelid surgery results.

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Eyelid surgery is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. It typically takes two hours and involves removing excess skin from lids, tightening muscles and tissues, and repositioning or removing fat deposits.

For upper eyelid surgery, incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. In the case of lower eyelid surgery, incisions are placed in the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid.

Oftentimes, additional support of the lower eyelid or repositioning of the lateral corner of the eye (also known as the lateral canthus) is necessary.  This suspension procedure called a canthopexy or canthoplasty can be performed in conjunction with blepharoplasty.

What to Expect from Blepharoplasty Recovery?

Following eyelid surgery, incision sites are covered with lubricating ointment and hydrating eye drops are frequently provided.

In the coming days, patients will experience some minor and temporary swelling and bruising. Keeping the head elevated and cold compresses will help to reduce swelling, and prescription pain medication can be used to alleviate any discomfort.

Within one week, women and men may return to work, but they should avoid strenuous physical activity for approximately three weeks.
