What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is an outpatient plastic surgery procedure that’s designed to reshape breasts and lift them to a more youthful position.

It also resizes and repositions the nipple-areolar complex to achieve ideal breast proportions and a natural appearance.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Good candidates for breast lift surgery are women with breast ptosis.   Breast ptosis is defined by sagging or deflated breasts with a lowered or downward facing nipple position.

In addition, good candidates are healthy women who understand the associated benefits, risks, and recovery requirements and have realistic expectations of results.

It’s also important that patients are non-smokers or are willing to stop smoking at least four weeks before and after surgery.

How Is a Breast Lift Performed?

In the past, a skin-only lift was a common mastopexy technique. Now, skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Bolden modify the breast’s internal structure in order to achieve long-lasting support and lifting.

The breast lift procedure is performed under general or local intravenous sedation and typically takes two-to-three hours to complete. Incision length and placement depend on the severity of ptosis. At Cultura Plastic Surgery, Dr. Bolden’s favorite approaches to your breast lift procedure are:

Anchor Lift:  The traditional, full breast lift consisting of three incisions, one incision around the areola, a second vertical incision from the nipple to the breast fold and a horizontal incision along the fold. This approach is recommended in the case of severe sagging of the breast.

Lollipop Lift:  For moderate to severe sagging, Dr. Bolden may create a vertical or lollipop incision, extending around the areola and down to the inframammary fold, the fold under the breast.

Donut Lift:  Also referred to as Benelli lift, is the ideal approach in cases where the breast has minimal sagging. Dr. Bolden creates an incision around the areola surrounding the nipple. This is a favorable approach since placing the incision in the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple blends in with the areola and easily conceals the scar upon healing.

Crescent Lift: Indicated when the breasts have minimal sagging, in which case Dr. Bolden places the incision in the crescent shaped skin above the areola, thus leaving the smallest scar. This technique is also popular when performing a breast augmentation, allowing for insertion of the implant above or below the muscle.

In the event of significant volume loss, breast implants may be used in conjunction with the breast lift and during the same operative session.  A breast lift-augmentation combination produces stellar results restoring the lifted breast to a rounder fuller breast shape.

What Can Patients Expect from Breast Lift Recovery?

Following breast lift surgery, incisions are closed with suture placed beneath the skin and bandaged. Patients are then placed in a surgical bra, which should be worn for two-to-three weeks.

Some soreness, swelling, and bruising are to be expected, and pain can be effectively managed with prescription pain medication.

If you received a breast augmentation with implants in conjunction with mastopexy, they will initially sit high on the chest and gradually descend into the implant pocket.

Most patients are able to return to work and light activities after seven-to-10 days.
