If you’ve seen the headlines connecting dermal fillers and the COVID-19 shot with swelling, you may be wondering, “Can I use dermal fillers with COVID-19 vaccine,” in a safe way?

While there is some evidence of swelling in patients who have had both dermal fillers AND the new coronavirus vaccine, the risk has seemingly been blown out of proportion. So, what’s the truth about the risk?

Can I Use Dermal Fillers With COVID-19 Vaccine, or Should I Wait?

According to dermatologists and other doctors, you do not need to delay the vaccine at all if you’ve had dermal fillers. In one study of 15,184 participants, there was a total of three subjects that had at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines and also had received fillers at some point beforehand that experienced facial or lip swelling within two days of vaccination. This swelling is not considered to be a serious effect and is not surprising either.

The vaccine creates an immune response, and it is possible that fillers can get caught in the crossfire. The immune response that caused swelling in the face or lips in the three participants was treated with antihistamines and oral steroids with no further incidence.

What if I Already Had Dermal Fillers – Can I Still Get the Vaccine?

There is no reason to wait to get the vaccine if you have recently had dermal filler injections. You should not be afraid to get the shot to help prevent coronavirus. It is more concerning to not get the vaccine, as you are at a greater risk if you were to get COVID.

What Should I Do if I Have a Reaction?

The good news is that on the rare occasion that you were to have a reaction to dermal fillers after a vaccine or to the shot after fillers, you can have the fillers reversed and / or be given steroids and antihistamines to calm the swelling.
