Protruding ears can result in cosmetic as well as psychological concerns. Children with prominent ears are often victims of bullying or may become self-conscious about their appearance.

Adults can also suffer low esteem from ears that stick out and feel as though they are limited to wearing hair styles that cover their ears and forgoing certain types of earrings.

In any of these cases, ear pinning can offer a safe, effective, and permanent surgical solution.

Continue reading to learn all about ear pinning, also known as otoplasty, at Cultura Plastic Surgery with board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kelly Bolden, and how it can help improve appearance and quality of life.

What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is an outpatient plastic surgery procedure designed to correct protruding ears. It may involve resecting skin, removing cartilage, or creating a fold to achieve the desired shape and position of the ears.

While the procedure is typically performed bilaterally, it is possible to treat only one prominent ear.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Ear Pinning?

Children, as young as seven, and adults who are in good health and wish to reshape their ears may be good candidates for otoplasty.

Younger patients find that the procedure boosts their confidence and helps avoid teasing at school.

Adults may seek treatment to improve facial appearance or enjoy wearing different hairstyles like a ponytail.

How Is Ear Pinning Performed?

Ear pinning is performed under general anesthesia and can involve correcting one or more issues. To start, if ear prominence is due to lack of an upper pole fold, skin of the ear is lifted and cartilage is sutured to itself to create a fold.

Additionally, to reduce the angle between the ear and the scalp, a portion of the skin behind the ear is resected, and the ear is sutured to the scalp.

Lastly, if excess cartilage in the middle ear is problematic, it can be removed during the procedure.

What Can Patients Expect from Otoplasty Recovery?

Following an ear pinning procedure, it is normal for patients to experience some swelling and bruising. These effects resolve on their own in the coming weeks, and makeup can be applied after one week to cover residual bruising.

It’s also recommended that patients limit activity for the one-to-two weeks after undergoing an otoplasty.

A series of post-op appointments will also take place to ensure proper healing. The first of these meetings will be the day after surgery.
