If you’re interested in turning back the clock on your skin, you’ve probably thought about laser skin resurfacing at some point.

Lasers being just one of many technologies used to stimulate collagen production, there are so many different alternatives from patients to choose from–so much so that it can be overwhelming.

So, here are some basic facts about laser skin resurfacing to help you be an informed consumer.

1. Try to Get Laser Treatments in the Winter

Remember: fundamentally, you’re using lasers to damage the skin. The sun can damage your skin with UV Rays, and that’s only going to get worse after laser treatment.

So try to get treated in the winter, when the sun is going to be out the least, and go ahead and slather on the sunscreen.

2. Medications and Existing Conditions Do Matter, so Be Honest

From Aspirin to Accutane, many medications can affect your procedure.

Accutane, for example, can prevent you from healing fully during the procedure–leading to scarring and ultimately undermining the point of the procedure.

Diabetes, meanwhile, may undermine the safety of the procedure.

3. A Lot Goes into Choosing Your Laser

There are many, many lasers out there. A laser like CO2 is ablative — which means it’s rougher on your skin, and will tend to be used for more severe skin issues.

Meanwhile, something like Intense Pulsed Light will be much gentler on the skin–and is often used for concerns like rosacea. Pulsed-Dye Lasers will be used for hyperpigmentation issues.

Depending on your skin, you need to be proactive in choosing the right laser.

While all of these lasers are very general purpose as well as specific in their uses, results will be best if the treatment is tailored to the issue.
